Total Institutions are all around us today in many different forms, varying in how they manage people but they will still be seen as different or unusual by society. The definition of a total institution is broad but still clear in what a community must have to fit the meaning. Primarily though, the lack of control over one's own life through expectations, punishment or discipline is what defines if a person lives in a total institution or not. These aren't necessarily bad though and there are many examples of this type of lifestyle done right. Religious exclusions and remote workplaces better the person in some form or way whether it's through inner-personal change, a new chance at life or the ability to get a higher paying job than normal. Some of these are also born out of necessity so they aren't necessarily good or bad such as nursing homes and mental hospitals. Ultimately, there will always be someone in charge but how much control that person has over your everyday life will determine the type of community you live in.
